The Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation conducted a study into drug use and car accidents. Researchers delved right in by examining data on over 44,000 drivers in single-vehicle accidents that occurred from 1999 to 2009. Each of these accidents involved a driver fatality. You know what researchers discovered? In about 25 percent of these fatal crashes, the driver tested positive for drugs.

To break it down even further, researchers uncovered that drivers tested positive for the following types of drugs:

22% had used marijuana
22% were positive for stimulants
9% had used narcotics

The authors of the study, Eduardo Romano and Robert Voas, say that their research is the first to highlight the prevalence of drug use among fatally injured drivers. The reason for this could be that the data available on drugged driving is not as widely available as that on drunk driving.

What is the most frightening aspect of drugged driving is that only 19 states have laws making it illegal to drive with any amount of drugs.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry in Scotland found that car accident victims who suffered injuries are more likely to develop chronic pain than after other physical traumatic events.

Chronic Pain More Prevalent in Car Accident Victims

During the study, 2,069 individuals gave researchers information about musculoskeletal pain and associated distress at three times over four years. Researchers then asked a series of questions, which included whether they were involved in a car crash. They discovered that people who stated that they had been in a traffic accident had an 84% higher risk of suffering from chronic pain.

However, despite these findings, the study authors believe that more research still needs to be done.

"Further research should focus on the unique aspects of an auto accident and the individual's reaction to this particular trauma that causes the increased risk of chronic widespread pain onset," explained Gareth Jones, of the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry in Scotland.

The study was published in the March 21 issue of the journal Arthritis Care & Research.
