A Manassas Car Accident Could Result From Just One Drink
It’s no secret that drunk driving is one of the most deadly activities one can engage in on the road. All you have to do is read the statistics regarding alcohol-related fatalities.
States across the nation have taken steps to reduce the likelihood of drunk driving fatalities by setting a limit on a driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC). In Virginia, a driver is considered too drunk to drive if he or she has a BAC of .08 percent or higher. However, a new study has found that a driver doesn’t have to have a BAC limit in this range to be dangerous. In fact, according to researchers, it only takes one drink to increase the odds of a Manassas car accident.
Think Twice About That Glass of Wine
University of California, San Diego conducted a study that revealed startling findings. Researchers discovered that having a blood alcohol concentration of just 0.01 percent raised the chances of being involved in a serious crash. How quickly can you get to 0.01 percent? It might only take one glass of beer or wine to reach that percentage.
During the study, researchers analyzed drunk driving accidents that occurred in our country from 1994 and 2008. Researchers found a link between having low limits of alcohol in the blood to the likelihood of a crash.
According to the study author, David Phillips, “buzzed drivers are more likely to speed, more likely to be improperly seat-belted and more likely to drive the striking vehicle, all of which are associated with greater severity.”
The study was published online June 20 in the journal Addiction. Researchers are hoping that their findings will encourage states to pass stricter drunk driving laws.
