Reston Car Accident Cases Involving Teens: Can They Be Prevented?

It’s a scary thing, watching your teen driver pull out of the driveway for the first time on his or her own. As a parent or caregiver, you put your hope and trust in the fact that your teenager has the adequate knowledge and training to safely operate a vehicle. Sadly, many teens are killed in car accidents each year, especially now that driver distractions are at an all time high.

You often hear stories of teens who made the fatal mistake of texting while driving or chose to drive drunk. There are other accidents that simply involved driver error and lack of experience.

Education for Parents

There are many organizations out there that are taking steps to curb teen driving accidents, including AAA. With the Keys2Drive program, AAA is hoping to educate both teens and parents regarding what they can do to prevent crashes.

Here are some of the important points that AAA wants parents to know:

  • Talk to your teen driver. You have been driving for years and have experience and knowledge that can be imparted to your teen. Talk about what it means to be a safe driver and his or her rules and responsibilities. The more that you discuss with your teen, the better. Discussions about driver safety should continue, even after your teenager has received his or her license.
  • Stay up-to-date. Let’s face it, most likely it has been many years since you obtained your driver’s license. Things have changed since then. It is important to know Virginia law regarding licensing, including the training your teen will need. Check with the Virginia DMV about these requirements.
  • Be a living example. It is one thing to tell your teenager what to do, but it is a whole lot more powerful to show him or her. Be a good role model when you are behind the wheel. Don’t speed, use your phone or drive aggressively. Your teen is watching you. Show him or her that driving is serious business.

With the proper discussions, training and education, many teen driving accidents can be prevented.
